"Making Room for the Children" Capital Campaign

THE RATHBUN CENTER'S MAKING ROOM FOR THE CHILDREN CAMPAIGN TO RAISE $1.1 MILLION 

A healthy child who never needs specialty medical care is every parent's hope.  Mission Children's Hospital has a yearly average of 1,600 patient admissions to their pediatric inpatient units, some 4,000 outpatient pediatric surgeries, and almost 14,000 pediatric visits to their Emergency Department.  Each year approximately 550 ill and premature newborns receive life-saving care in their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. 

The Rathbun Center is a hospital hospitality house with a single mission - to provide lodging and other supportive services in a home-like environment, free of charge, for patients and/or their caregivers coming to Asheville for medical treatment.  In the current economy, more and more families need the services provided by the Center, particularly families of children, and we recognize the need will continue to grow.

On any given day we have up to 25 families on our waiting list hoping for a room while their loved one, often a child, is receiving medical treatments.  Our need for more guest rooms is crucial. The Rathbun Center is expanding its capacity to meet that need. 

In order to make the expansion possible, The Rathbun Center has launched a capital campaign with a goal of raising $1.1 million. The expansion will include:  

• Six new child/family-friendly guest rooms
• Full utilization of five additional underutilized rooms, increasing the Center's
• overall capacity by 44%
• A children's library  and a relocated and expanded and play room with a new deck leading to the children's outdoor playground, with the roof of the new play room providing an outdoor deck for the existing main dining room on the 2nd floor
• Added laundry facilities and storage closets to serve the additional guests and housekeeping
• A much-needed new roof for the entire facility
